Since then, citizens have taken to the Web politically and also, despite <a title=\"The New Yorker: Malcolm Gladwell - Why the Revolution Will Not be Tweeted\" href=\"http:\/\/www.newyorker.com\/reporting\/2010\/10\/04\/101004fa_fact_gladwell\" target=\"_blank\">predictions to the contrary<\/a> this has complimented and inspired action in the streets in ways America hasn&#8217;t seen since the Vietnam War. This desire for social change comes from within us, but it&#8217;s social technology, specifically social media that has brought us the capacity to each and every one of us to act and achieve meaningful impact.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Occupy Wall Street and MoveOn.org<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Over the course of seven months in 2011, <a href=\"http:\/\/occupywallst.org\/\">Occupy Wall Street<\/a>\u00a0coined and proceeded to burn the term <a title=\"Washington Post - Who are the 99 Percent?\" href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/blogs\/ezra-klein\/post\/who-are-the-99-percent\/2011\/08\/25\/gIQAt87jKL_blog.html\" target=\"_blank\">the 99 percent<\/a>\u00a0into our collective consciousness. Protestors inhabited the spaces of the <a title=\"KAnsas City Star - There&#039;s lots of 1 per centers in the US\" href=\"http:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">1 percent<\/a>, grabbing worldwide attention. Social media played a key role in putting their activities on the map including:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li>Hashtags: #OccupyWallStreet, #sleeponwallstreet, #whilewewatch<\/li>\n<li>Live Tweeting from protests<\/li>\n<li>a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.flickr.com\/photos\/occupywallstreet\/\">Flickr Photo Stream<\/a><\/li>\n<li>LiveStream HD and Video<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/howtooccupy.org\/\">Online training materials for activists<\/a> to employ on the ground<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>MoveOn.org uses its massive email database to get people to sign petitions quickly, and share those petitions with friends through social networks, especially Facebook. The progressive political organization is also providing free activism training through which participants can \u201cjoin to reclaim our country, one neighborhood at a time.&#8221; This effort, Move On\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/training.the99spring.com\/training\/99spring\/?rc=homepage.sidebar\">The 99% Spring<\/a> provides an 8-part, 90-minute training session; 10 national action days in which to participate; and an online community where you can <a href=\"http:\/\/actions.the99spring.com\/actions\">create your own 99-percent Spring event.<\/a><\/p>\n<p><strong>Republican social media and the Tea Party<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Conservatives will not be outdone in in the social space in 2012 as as they were in 2008. Perhaps one of the most to-the-point and immediately useful political, social media efforts is the website simply named <a title=\"Republican Social Media\" href=\"http:\/\/www.republicansocialmedia.com\/\" target=\"_blank\">Republican Social Media<\/a>. Perhaps the most sought-after <a title=\"@Politics on Twitter\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/#!\/politics\" target=\"_blank\">Twitter handle, @politics<\/a> does a good job of addressing issues important to both sides of the aisle.Home to one of the most successful 3rd parties in history, the<a title=\"Tea Party Patriots\" href=\"http:\/\/teapartypatriots.ning.com\/\" target=\"_blank\"> Tea Party Patriots<\/a> have their \u201cOfficial Home\u201d page, where visitors must declare your allegiance to the Tea Party in order to create an account and participate. That\u2019s their private blog. Then there\u2019s the red, white, blue and flashy version with featured <a href=\"https:\/\/www.teapartypatriots.org\/\">Tea Party bloggers<\/a> and contrary opinions.<\/p>\n<p><strong>The next wave of social media in politics<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>From the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.guardian.co.uk\/world\/interactive\/2011\/mar\/22\/middle-east-protest-interactive-timeline\">Arab Spring<\/a> to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/national\/on-innovations\/social-medias-role-in-politics\/2012\/01\/25\/gIQAQvZgdQ_story.html\">Washington Pos<\/a>t to Republican strategist Wesley Donehue\u2019s warning on \u201c<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2012\/04\/24\/opinion\/donehue-social-media-politics\/index.html\">The danger of \u00a0Twitter, Facebook politics<\/a>,\u201d the conversation continues. Whether they\u2019re conservative or very liberal &#8212; voters are participating in the online conversation around politics.
